Minor in Chess in Education

This minor focuses on developing chess educators academically and professionally, bridging the access gap between K-12 chess education and professional pursuits. Students will learn how to teach chess as a sport and an academic discipline while identifying and solving gaps in the field through projects. These future chess educators will be able to identify and socially advocate for areas that need progress, such as sustainable scholastic programming, women’s chess, research best practices and more.

This minor provides an opportunity for students in other program areas to develop skills in teaching, instructional design and program facilitation. Students in this minor can expect to develop teaching, training and instructional development skills that they can apply to designing learning for different types of learners.

This sustainable studies program prepares students to assume roles of leadership that transform schools or organizations to be models of sustainable living. Webster students develop an understanding of the challenges involved in sustaining human well-being and environmental health, and are able to communicate professionally about the environment, human rights, policy and ethics that directly influence their own lives and communities.
