Webster student, Justin: Hello, and welcome to Webster University. My name is Justin, and while I’m a senior now, I remember being a new student and how overwhelming it was to learn about all the available resources, and who to ask for help. Webster does have a helpful technology tool available that can help you manage all these resources — it’s called the Student Success Portal, powered by Starfish. The Student Success Portal, or Starfish, is a tool that quickly connects you to the people and services that can help you finish what you start — your degree. It enables you to engage with the Webster community, and ultimately, achieve your academic goals. Let’s take a walk around the Student Success Portal so I can show you some of its features.
[Computer screen displays search bar as success.webster.edu is typed in; mouse moves to right side of page highlighting the search portal.]
Log in by going to success.webster.edu or by clicking on the Student Success Portal from either Connections or WorldClassroom. No additional passwords to remember!
[Computer’s profile page demonstrates how to add a photo.]
[Justin’s cropped image pops up on screen.]
When you log in for the first time, make sure you set up your profile. Add your picture, add a personal email address, cell phone number or any other information you choose to include.
[More computer pages within the profile settings on screen.]
If you add your personal email, be sure to select the option, “Also send notification to my alternate email address” so that any messages or notifications from the system can be sent both to your Webster and personal accounts.
[Justin appears again on video, which then switches to computer profile creation screens displaying steps.]
You can also put your cell phone number in if you want to get text updates. So now, let’s get to your dashboard, which is your main landing page. Notice the hand icon at the top right? Click it to request help. I’ll review more about raising your hand for help later.
[Justin is on computer screen followed by a calendar page, then notifications page.]
The first thing you’ll see on this page is your calendar. This is where you view your current course schedule, week by week. Starfish is the only place where you can find this view of your schedule, in a weekly format. If you have any upcoming appointments with an advisor or an instructor, or a pending deadline, those will be listed here. Scrolling down a bit more, you’ll see your notifications. If you’ve received any referrals, to-dos, or flags that need attention, those will be listed here. As they get resolved, they will disappear from your list.
[A new computer page on screen.]
After that is My Connections. This is a directory of your current instructors and other helpful staff such as your academic advisor, financial aid counselor, connection leader and housing community director. Some of your contacts may even have a “Schedule Meeting" button which makes it easy for you to schedule an appointment with that person, without having to call. Click on “My Success Network” for even more information and to search for additional University services and team members.
[Computer screen with the Kudos page. Justin’s cropped image pops up.]
Finally, we’ve come to Kudos, which is a way your instructors, advisors and others at the University, let you know when you are doing something good or helpful. Maybe they give you kudos because they appreciate your insight and class contributions! Up on the hamburger menu, you have additional options that you can navigate in the system. Let’s quickly click through those options:
My Success Network — as mentioned above, the My Success Network lists individuals at the University who are connected to your success, such as instructors, advisors and other staff. You can also search for services in this area using the search bar.
[More computer screens display for each subject being talked about.]
For example, if you search Academic Advising, you can pull up the Academic Advising Center and from here, make an appointment with any advisor listed. It’s super easy and gives you a lot of flexibility to connect across the University.
Upcoming — if you have any upcoming appointments that you made in Starfish, those will be listed here.
Intake — you will be asked to complete this form during Welcome Weekend at Webster.
Messages — if you get a referral or a direct message from someone at the University, in addition to getting notified via email, you can also access the information in this part of the Student Success Portal.
Plans — some students may have a plan loaded. If you have a plan here, make sure to follow the steps to stay on track.
Courses — this will show your current course enrollment, including contact information for your instructors. If your instructor has online scheduling available, you’ll see it here, too.
Raise your hand — This is an easy way to request help. Need help in a course? Raise your hand. Need help getting ready for next semester’s classes? Raise your hand.
That’s your quick tour of the Student Success Portal, Powered by Starfish. Remember to come back here whenever you need information or to connect with services. Welcome to Webster University!
