Chemical Hygiene Plan

The Chemical Hygiene Plan (requires login) contains policies and procedures to protect everyone on campus at Webster University. It applies to everyone on campus, from students to staff, and provides a clear set of instructions to protect people from the dangers of hazardous chemicals. This plan outlines responsibilities for everyone, from lab supervisors to students, to ensure a safe environment. It covers a wide range of topics, including how to handle different types of chemicals, what to do during an emergency like a spill, chemical exposure or fire, and how to properly store and dispose of waste. The plan also explains what personal protective equipment, like safety glasses and gloves, you need to wear, and outlines use and maintenance for other safety equipment used when working with hazardous chemicals, such as fume hoods and eye-wash stations. This document is a guide to make sure all labs and workspaces at the University are as safe as possible.

Hazard Communication Program

The Hazard Communication Program (requires login) is a system designed to makes sure all information about chemical hazards is clearly communicated and understood to prevent accidents and injuries. The main goal is to make sure everyone — faculty, students and staff — is aware of the potential dangers of the chemicals they might encounter at work or school. This program ensures that all chemical containers are clearly labeled with important information and warnings. It also requires that a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) be available for every chemical, which acts as a detailed guide to the chemical's hazards, storage, disposal and safe handling. The program requires that people are trained on how to understand these labels and SDSs, how to use safety equipment and what to do in case of a chemical emergency.
