Course Descriptions
AVIT 1100 Fundamentals of Pro AV (3)
This course introduces students to intermediate-level Pro AV design concepts, equipment management, and testing and troubleshooting methods and practices. Topics include familiarity with audio, video, lighting, and IT equipment, intermediate-level system architecture and integration, test and measurement equipment, measurement techniques and diagnostic procedures, installation practices, and basic cable building skills.
AVIT 2100 Pro AV 2 (3)
This course builds upon the foundational concepts introduced in Fundamentals of Pro AV. It prepares students for the industry-standard foundational certification by addressing the technical knowledge and applied skills required for entry-level professional audiovisual work. Topics will include, but are not limited to, wiring and infrastructure, networking, power systems, video technologies, and audio systems. Prerequisite: AVIT 1100.
AVIT 2400 Electricity for Pro AV (3)
This course introduces students to the foundational electrical principles that are fundamental to modern Professional AV (Pro AV) systems. Topics include electrical code standards, building and low-voltage system design, power distribution, and common grounding and noise challenges in audio and signal pathways. Emphasis is placed on safe practices and the essential electrical knowledge required for technicians and installers in commercial AV environments.
AVIT 2500 Pro AV Documentation and Software (3)
This course provides hands-on training in producing professional audiovisual documentation using industry-standard software tools. Students will develop proficiency in creating AV line drawings, detailed signal-flow diagrams, rack elevations, and bid-ready project documents. Emphasis is placed on accuracy, clarity, and adherence to professional documentation standards essential for work in the AVIT industry. Prerequisite: AVIT 2100.
AVIT 2700 Networking for Pro AV (3)
This course introduces students to the networking concepts, protocols, and system architectures essential to modern Professional AV (Pro AV) environments. Students will examine how audio and video signals are transported as packets across network-based infrastructures, with emphasis on IP addressing, subnetting, VLANs, QoS, and common AV-over-IP standards. Through hands-on configuration and troubleshooting exercises, students will learn to design, deploy, and maintain reliable AV networks used in commercial installations. The course prepares students to collaborate effectively with IT professionals and integrators in networked AV system design, installation, and support. Prerequisite: AVIT 1100.
AVIT 3100 Pro AV Installer (3)
This course prepares students with the advanced skills and knowledge associated with professional audiovisual system installation and supports preparation for the CTS-I (Certified Technology Specialist–Installation) credential. While the course does not administer the CTS-I examination, it aligns coursework with industry standards and competencies required for certification. Topics include system installation and configuration, client and end-user training, installation documentation, testing and verification procedures, and project closeout practices across professional AV environments. Prerequisite: AVIT 2100.
