With better information and scientific data available, the methods that scientists and theorists use to study biological sciences are evolving.

At Webster University, biological sciences majors and minors engage in a rigorous, cross-disciplinary educational program in the physical and biological sciences designed to help them keep pace with that evolution. Coursework in biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue careers from science teaching or field studies to biotechnology to medicine. Students in the biological sciences program also have the option to focus their degree with an area of emphasis.

Areas of Emphasis:

  • Chemistry

Designed for students who wish to further expand and deepen their knowledge in the field of chemistry. It is particularly well suited for students who are interested in pharmaceuticals and for those pursuing laboratory positions or graduate studies in areas involving chemical techniques.
  • Computational Biology

Designed for students interested in data-based research careers in biological sciences, medicine, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and more. It is designed to provide a cross-disciplinary experiences in biology, data science, computer programming, and math, with the flexibility to allow the student to focus on their areas of interest and strengths.
  • Health & Medicine

Designed for students interested in a continuing education in any of the various medical fields, particularly those pursuing a pre-professional program like pre-medical or pre-veterinarian. It is meant primarily for students preparing for careers such as medical doctors, physician's assistants, dentists, veterinarians, chiropractors, physical therapists, or athletic trainers.
  • Research & Technology

Designed primarily for students pursuing a career path in: (a) commercial, academic, or government research, (b) high-demand technical and laboratory positions, and (c) graduate studies in advanced biology fields and related areas such as biochemistry and biophysics.

Alumni Success:

  • Analytical Chemist at Monsanto
  • Medical school at SIU
  • Research Associate at Benson Hill Biosystems
  • Veterinary school at Univ of Missouri, Columbia
  • Senior Computational Scientists at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center
  • PhD Plant Biology program at Cornell University

Points of Distinction

  • Graduates pursue careers in biotechnology, medicine, science-based research, various health professions, chemical and molecular disciplines, and advanced graduate studies.

  • Small classes and labs to create an ideal environment for learning, interaction, and discovery.

  • Full-time faculty are experts in a range of fields including genetics, biochemistry, plant physiology, neurology, chemistry, and physics.

  • Facilities boast equipment that supports a comprehensive range of subject matter, including genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, and cellular biology.

  • Curriculum includes extensive laboratory experience, ensuring that each student will develop proficiency in a wide range of lab techniques, as well as in the analysis, interpretation, and presentation of scientific data.

  • Internship opportunities allow undergraduates to gain research experience at organizations like the Missouri Botanical Garden, the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, the Saint Louis Zoo, the St. Louis Children’s Aquarium, and the St. Louis Department of Water Facilities.
