Dean Peter Sargent Receives Prestigious State Award for Leadership in the Arts

Leigh Gerdine College of Fine Arts Dean Peter Sargent will be honored as the Missouri Arts Awards honoree in the Leadership in the Arts category on Friday.

ST. LOUIS, March 6, 2014 – Since 1983, the Missouri Arts Council and the State of Missouri have been honoring the state’s arts heroes through the annual Missouri Arts Awards, celebrating people, organizations and communities that have made profound and lasting contributions to the cultural and artistic climate of the state. Honorees are selected in six categories: Arts Education, Arts Organization, Creative Community, Individual Artist, Leadership in the Arts and Philanthropy.

This year, Leigh Gerdine College of Fine Arts Dean Peter Sargent was selected as the Missouri Arts Awards honoree in the Leadership in the Arts category. The Missouri Arts Council, in partnership with the City of Webster Groves and Webster University, invite members of the Webster community to attend the local presentation of the state’s prestigious Leadership in the Arts Award to Sargent on Friday, March 7, at 4 p.m. in the Winifred Moore Auditorium. A reception will following the award presentation. RSVP to Nancy Higgins at 314-968-6959 or higgins@webster.edu.

The Missouri Arts Council noted Sargent’s more than four decades as an indefatigable advocate for the arts and arts education. “New England native Peter Sargent arrived in Missouri in 1966 as part of the original company of the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, started by Marita Woodruff and Michael Flanagan while Jacqueline Grennan was president of what was then called Webster College. Since then, he has been the Rep’s resident lighting designer, and since 1995 he has been dean of the Leigh Gerdine College of Fine Arts at what is now Webster University. He created the university’s Conservatory of Theatre Arts.”

In addition to his work at Webster, among the many organizations in which Sargent has played or continues to play a leadership role are the College Theatre Council of Greater St. Louis, INSIGHT THEATRE COMPANY, St. Louis Black Repertory Theatre, Young Audiences of St. Louis, Dance St. Louis, Shakespeare Festival of St. Louis and the Arts and Education Council.
