The Broadway musical won six Tonys in all, including Best Musical, Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical, Best Original Score, Best Sound Design of a Musical, and Best Orchestrations.

Mitchell also was nominated for Best Direction of a Musical. In 2005, Mitchell won a Tony Award for his choreography in "La Cage Aux Folles." And, last month, Mitchell received the prestigious "Mr. Abbott" Award for Lifetime Achievement in the American Theatre, conferred by the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographer's Foundation.

In April, Mitchell, who attended Webster in the late '70s and early '80s and was awarded an honorary doctorate in 2005, was on campus for opening night of the Webster University Conservatory production of "Legally Blonde," a show he directed and choreographed on Broadway. It was Mitchell's Broadway debut as a director. "Legally Blonde" won an Olivier Award for Best Musical and earned Tony and Drama Desk nominations for choreography.

While on campus, Mitchell also visited a class of Musical Theatre students to offer performance and audition tips and answer their questions about careers on Broadway.
