FEE REFERENDUM – ACTIVITY FEE INCREASE

Activity Fee Increase Proposal

An increase in the Student Activity Fee to $100.00, during the fall and spring semester, shall be enacted beginning Fall 2014.  This fee increase will elevate the quality and quantity of campus-sponsored events and programs, as well as provide supplemental funding for Student Government Association and registered student organizations.  This fee would be disbursed to Campus Activities, the Multicultural Center and International Student Affairs (MCISA) and the Student Government Association (SGA) in ratios determined by the Dean of Students office and reviewed on an annual basis.  Distribution of funding to student organizations, Programming Pool and Student Grant Fund would continue to be under the jurisdiction of SGA.

This fee would only apply to full-time, flat-fee undergraduate students (13 credits or more per semester) studying at the Webster University home campus.

This vote serves only as a recommendation from the student body.  Endorsement by the Webster University Administrative Council will be required before a fee would go into effect.

History of Activity Fee and Peer Institution Comparison

Current Structure (approved by student referendum April 2006): An activity fee of $30 per semester was enacted to increase the quality and quantity of campus-sponsored events and programs.  carolinewiley

Intent to Run: I joined SGA after transferring to Webster in 2012 in search of ways to be involved in more than just classes. With over 50 organizations on campus, there’s no shortage of ways to get involved. A friend informed me that there was an open seat in my department, so I ran and wonder of wonders, I was elected. What I've since learned is that involved students can and do make a difference. I've learned, first hand, that there are serious issues facing Webster that impact the student body, and students need a voice and representation in the resolution of these issues. For this reason, I have decided to run for president. As president, my primary focus will be to support student organizations by changing the way in which funds are allocated. Funded activities/organizations are paramount to the growth of Webster. Students want to see thriving organizations gaining attention and participation. Additionally, I will fight for the continuation of student voice through on-campus media, and create a welcoming environment for students to voice their concerns to SGA. Finally, I'm running with students in mind who are much like I was, searching for ways to make the most of the Webster experience.

Statement of Goals: Increase funding to student organizations by reallocating SGA funds and reducing expenses. Make SGA general body meetings an open space for students to bring forth concerns. General body meetings are usually consumed by the bringing forward of SGF and Programming Pool requests. This is understandable; however, the remaining population of the student body needs to feel welcome at general body meetings. Support the continuation of printed student media. Readership of The Journal will greatly decrease if it is no longer in print. Many Students use The Journal and The Ampersand to stay updated and aware of current events on campus.

 Gabrielle Deimeke
Position Sought: President
Enrollment Status: Junior
College or School: School of Communications
Major: Photography

 gabrielledeimeke

Intent to Run: I, Gabrielle Deimeke, intend to run for the role of President of Webster University Student Government Association for the 2014-15 academic school year because I believe that I can make a positive impact on the Webster Groves campus. I am confident that I will lead Student Government Association to be the best organization it can be for students at Webster University. With your support, we can create an environment where student’s needs are met and voices are heard. I want to establish an open forum for student issues to be addressed and resolved, and an open line of communication. I think that Student Government can continue to make progress to improve the collegiate experience for Webster students, and I feel that I can provide the qualities and experiences necessary for the task.

Statement of Goals: University budget cuts, and student organization budget cuts, are an important issue right now. I will strive to create a balance while still giving as much funding as possible to student organizations. I want to host forums for students to talk about their issues, and work with the administration to create an open line of communication. My goal is to create outreach and build a strong presence in the Webster Groves community. Finally, as President during the Centennial, I want to represent our students in the celebration and be permanently remembered in Webster’s history.

 Javier Cardenas
Position Sought: President
Enrollment Status: Junior
College or School: College of Arts and Sciences
Major: Political Science

 javiercardenas

Intent to Run: I intend to run for this office to better improve the situation of the students of Webster University. Be the connection between the student body and administration. I am running for President of SGA at a moment in which leadership and experience is needed. Cuts have affected not only Webster University administration but student organizations as well. Someone with leadership experience and know how needs to be elected to this office. I was President at my high school, as well as being in leadership roles throughout those years. When I arrived at Webster I also ran for office, winning an election to become Senator of Arts and Sciences, working hard to help the student body. We need proven students to navigate the waters that we approach because of the recent cuts, and I will work hard alongside administration and my fellow students to see us through these hard times.

Statement of Goals: My goals after becoming SGA President would be simple. Working alongside administration and my fellow SGA representatives to obtain as much funding back for students as possible. School organizations have been severely affected by these cuts in funding, not allowing them to execute great ideas because of lack of funding. Even starting a new organization is less desirable because of the loss of enthusiasm in students with having to deal with not so great finances. My goal as SGA President would be to work towards raising the funds we give students for their passions here at Webster.

 Caleb Hirsch
Position Sought: President
Enrollment Status: Sophomore
College or School: George Herbert Walker School of Business and Technology
Major: Finance

 calebhirsch

Intent to Run: I am running for President of SGA, I feel I am qualified because I am very friendly, always willing to listen to people, and really enjoy helping people. Outside my personal traits I have worked for Schnucks Markets a local St. Louis company for about three and a half years. Working in this professional environment has given me a plethora of experience in dealing with bureaucracy, chains of command, and personal relations. I have worked in just about every department, of the store I work at, demonstrating my ability to adapt to new environments, learn new skills quickly, and fulfill organizational goals set forth by the managers above me. I've even had a brief stint of managing experience when my manager was out on medical leave and I was asked to fill in. I value my professional work experience greatly and feel it really qualifies me to lead. Particularly because in a retail environment you are constantly dealing with customers and having to make decisions to keep them smiling and satisfied. I feel diplomacy is the most important attribute for a leader, all the while being conscientious of those you are in contact.

Statement of Goals: I will be diplomatic in my approach to representing the students, I will voice every students' concerns. I will take care of all unresolved issues that students feel are tantamount to there success, in the most effective manner. Conversation between administrators and teachers with their students is key to auspicious students and enables them to be a part of the whole experience. I will administer polls to students to gather data about what they want, and what they really value. I will attempt to "globalize" our campus, by that I mean connect students who've never met get different groups communicating.

 Jon Strauser
Position Sought: Vice President
Enrollment Status: Sophomore
College or School: George Herbert Walker School of Business and Technology
Major: Finance

 jonstrauser

Intent to Run: I am running for Vice-President of Student Government because I believe that the students of Webster University deserve a voice. Previously, I held office as Senator of the George Herbert Walker School of Business and Technology, Chairman of the Sustainability Coalition, Chairman of Webster Social Choice Fund, Webster Works Worldwide Committee, and a member of the Budget Committee. Through these various committees, I was able to listen and hear students’ needs and wants here on campus. If you vote for me, I will continue to move forward and accomplish our goals for the better of this institution.

Statement of Goals: As Vice-President, my primary goals would be to improve sustainability and wellness here on campus. Over the years, this institution has seen an increase number of concerns for Webster University and its students. Improvement in these areas would help educate students of the benefits for this institution and themselves.

 Jenna Hopkins
Position Sought: Vice President
Enrollment Status: Junior
College or School: College of Arts and Sciences
Major: Political Science

 jennahopkins

Intent to Run: The second oldest of five children, I have grown up adoring my older sister while striving to set the best example for my three younger siblings. Therefore, I have learned how to follow and lead simultaneously, which makes me the perfect candidate for the Vice Presidency of SGA. As both an athlete and an intellectual, I am able to provide insight and promote interconnectivity from within the student body. I have played soccer on campus in Saint Louis and argued on behalf of the United States of America for Model United Nations in Southern France. Being homegrown and global has allowed me to develop an open mind while staying strong willed in my goals and aspirations. I have interned at the World Trade Center, and this summer I will be working alongside Senator McCaskill in her Saint Louis Office. These opportunities have helped me to develop my skills and with my election to the SGA body I will be able to pass along my passion and work ethic to elevate the office of Vice President to create better policy for the students.

Statement of Goals: As Vice President I will directly work to improve student life and provide the means for them to reach their full potential. Foremost I want to establish a link between departments, between majors, and between peers to come up with innovative solutions and creative opportunities to discover something new in life and work. Additionally, I want to relate ones hobbies and careers through programs that offer students exciting experiences; be it basket weaving, a leadership summit or a TEDx conference.

 Joshua Merseal
Position Sought: Comptroller
Enrollment Status: Senior
College or School: College of Arts & Sciences
Major: Computer Science

 joshuamerseal

Intent to Run: I am running for the position of comptroller. I feel that I would be a good choice for this position, since I was a club treasurer for a year and am currently the comptroller. So I know how the system works both from an external and an internal perspective. While I am a Computer Science Major, I have a Business minor which is helpful since I have taken a number of classes on accounting and finance.

Statement of Goals: As comptroller in Fall of 2014, it will be my goal to better student life by helping to ensure that student organizations never again have to go through budget reductions like they did this past semester. This will be done through changes in the By-Laws of the Budget Committee, plus continued talks and meetings with the administration about SGA’s funding.

 Juan Sebastian Granizo
Position Sought: Comptroller
Enrollment Status: Sophomore
College or School: George Herbert Walker School of Business and Technology
Major: Management: International Business

 juansebastiangranizo

Intent to Run: I am running for Comptroller of SGA, and I have many qualities that can help SGA advance and move forward with their plans for the student body, and the university as a whole. I am extremely organized, and proficient in the art of mathematics and numbers. I can crunch down numbers and can make the most out of the amount of money allotted to SGA. I am currently in accounting classes that will also further my ability to help SGA. Math and money is my passion, and I can use that to improve SGA and make it work for the students once again.

Statement of Goals: My goal is to improve the situation and gain experience that will improve me personally and improve SGA. I want to improve the situation for the clubs that have had their funds cut because of budget cuts. I believe it is a problem that is severe and needs to be fixed immediately for the sake of the students and the university, as well as campus life.

 David Lambus
Position Sought:
Director of Communications
Enrollment Status:
Sophomore
College or School:
George Herbert Walker School of Business and Technology
Major:
Business Management

 davidlambus

Intent to Run: My intentions to run for Student Government is to improve the lives of students at Webster. I am running for the position of Director of Communications, I am qualified for this experience because of my many years as part of a track team and having to communicate with each other on how we will race together, and focus on strategy for winning as many races as possible. I am currently on the track team of Webster and this has allowed me to further advance my leadership and communicative skills. These skill will be used if I am elected to make SGA work as smoothly and clean as possible. As well as transparent and informative towards the students and administration.

Statement of Goals: My main goal would be to increase the knowledge of what SGA does around this university. I want students to know who their representatives are and how they work together to make their experience at this institution as fun and memorable as possible. I would represent the students of Webster with great honor and pride as well as with ownership of what I do.

 Nicole Griffin
Position Sought:
Director of Communications
Enrollment Status: Sophomore
College or School: School of Education
Major: Secondary Math Education

 nicolegriffin

Intent to Run: I am running for the Director of Communications. The Director of Communication is supposed to increase and maintain the SGA name and promote SGA events. I have experience with promoting events because I am the president of the Student Education Association and create and promote their events.

Statement of Goals: I want to increase attendance at the Delegate's Agenda as well as other SGA events. Previous experience shows that the general body meetings are under attended and I will find a way to increase the attendance.

 Amy Clark
Position Sought:
Secretary
Enrollment Status: Junior
College or School: College of Arts and Science
Major: Cultural Anthropology

 amyclard

Intent to Run: I am running for secretary under Javier's campaign. I am currently the treasurer for Danceline so I understand the importance of being well-organized. I currently hold the position of Vice President in charge of recruitment for our on-campus sorority, Delta Phi Epsilon. I have a team of coordinators and team members under me and I am in charge of recording the minutes for our team meetings. These qualities make me well-qualified to hold the position of secretary.

Statement of Goals: With Javier and our team, I hope to improve collectivity between administration and the student body, help organizations to receive more funding for next year after their budgets were cut by half, and reform the ways that SGA is currently run.

Alex Bonney
Position Sought:
Sergeant at Arms
Enrollment Status: Sophomore
College or School: George Herbert Walker School of Business and Technology
Major: Computer Science

 alexbonney

Intent to Run: In my two years here at Webster, I have amassed several experiences which qualify me for the position of Sergeant at Arms of Student Government Organization. During my time served as National Communications Coordinator, I sat in on many regional and national boardrooms where I utilized parliamentary procedure to engage in thoughtful, structured conversation and express ideas in a large room full of active student leaders from universities all across the nation. The size of Sunnen Lounge, comparatively, is far less of a challenge after participating in these conferences. During my stay in Student Government, I have served in many capacities, ranging from an SGA adviser for budding student groups, to a calculated gatekeeper, responsibly distributing student funds to better the university. I have served as an advocate since my first few weeks here at Webster through RHA and have become very attune to student concerns. I have a wealth of public speaking expertise, as can be seen in my Delegate's Agenda presentation. This is essential to the smooth operations of each general body meeting, as it is the Sergeant at Arms' duty to keep meetings on track, utilizing his voice.

Statement of Goals: As Sergeant at Arms, I would continue the work started by the current Sergeant at Arms by carefully revising and reforming SGA's constitution so that it may more effectively serve the student body. I will continue my endeavors as a member of the Community Engagement Committee and further efforts to improve relations with the Webster Groves community. I will introduce new parliamentary procedures commonly used by other organizations to improve the quality of our meetings and keep them efficient and on topic. I will do my best to maintain the value of every student's education through recent budget cuts.

DeVon Haynes
Position Sought:
Sergeant-at-Arms
Enrollment Status: Junior
College or School: College of Arts and Sciences
Major: Cultural Anthropology

 devonhaynes

Intent to Run: I am running for the office of Sergeant at Arms. I am a great people person, being part of the Webster basketball team has helped me improve my ability to lead and be a team member. Throughout high school I had leadership roles with different projects around my school and the basketball team. I have also continued this with the Webster basketball team and the choir of Webster University, which requires even more team work than the basketball team because of the simple nature of what choir is.

Statement of Goals: My goals would be to make the students of Webster enjoy their four year stint here. I also want to improve the role that SGA has, making it a more present organization around campus and in the lives of the students. I would represent students with the best of my abilities and with as much good heart as possible.

Robert Polzin
Position Sought:
Student Organization Liaison
Enrollment Status: Senior
College or School: College of Arts and Sciences
Major: Biology

 robertpolzin

Intent to Run: I intend to run for Student Organization Liaison, and I feel that my personal qualities and prior experiences make me a good candidate for this role. I have previously acted as Vice President of the Muslim Student Association at STLCC-Meramec, and was both a founding member and treasurer of the Outdoors Club at the same school. I also represented these clubs at a number of Student Government Association meetings while at Meramec. I am currently the Vice Chairperson of the Sierra Club (Eastern Missouri Group) Executive Committee, which is tasked with organizing the other committees which make up our group (political, outings, etc.), as well as approving both the group budget and any local political endorsements. I feel that the experience working with both the student-led groups at Meramec, and working with a long-standing advocacy organization like the Sierra Club, has helped prepare me for the work that would be necessary in the Webster SGA community.

Statement of Goals: I want to ensure that the student-led organizations on our campus feel that they are welcome, that their concerns are being met in a prompt and proper manner. Given the recent cuts to funding for these organizations, it is more difficult than before to plan a proper event schedule for those involved, more difficult to keep club members and the broader student body engaged. Not just for fun activities, but for service-oriented groups that can make a real difference in the community. I want to do whatever I can to help maintain a strong level of interest in student organizations.

Chandler Waite
Position Sought:
Student Organization Liaison
Enrollment Status: Junior
College or School: College of Arts and Sciences
Major: International Relations

 chandlerwaite

Intent to Run: I'm running for the position of student organisation liaison. I chose this position because I'm a good people person and enjoy talking with others. Also, student organisation liaison requires bluntness and the ability to state the facts to others while being able to stay friendly and helpful, something I know I can do. Further, I'm interested in helping the student organisations grow and become more productive. Since being assigned to the SGF subcommittee I've learned many different avenues that groups can take in order to be successful, which is so important for this position. Finally, I'm very organised and take professionalism seriously.

Statement of Goals: As a student organisation liaison I would strive to create a closer relationship between student organisations and the SGA body. Through clear communication, I would give student organisations the information and tools they need to be successful on campus. It would be my priority to make sure each group is treated equally and fairly.

 Katherine Barry
Position Sought:
Senator
Enrollment Status: Junior
College or School: College of Arts and Sciences
Major: Psychology

 katherinebarry

Intent to Run: I am running for Senator for the College of Arts & Sciences. I feel that I hold many qualities that make up an excellent Student Government Association Senator. These qualities include being not just organized but also being able to prioritize, having excellent communication skills, and being able to incorporate many perspectives when making decisions. I also feel that I have many experiences that make me an exceptional candidate. I have held three executive board positions in the Residential Housing Association, I was on the student panel member at the Faculty Senate this semester where we discussed student-centeredness and the student's perspective at Webster, I have been on several ad-hoc committees involving programs, I am on the Accessibility Committee, and I have been in the Student Government Association for one semester.

Statement of Goals: For the College of Arts & Sciences, I hope to represent the Webster students in any way possible. Even though I know many people throughout the College of Arts & Sciences, I will branch beyond those who I know personally in order to be able to fully represent my constituents. In order to improve student life at Webster, I hope to bring to the Dean what is truly important to the students.

 Anna Gaffney
Position Sought:
Senator
Enrollment Status: Freshman
College or School: George Herbert Walker School of Business and Technology
Major: Management: Human Resources

 annagaffney

Intent to Run: I would be honored to run for the position of George Herbert Walker School of Business and Technology Senator. I am currently enrolled in this school and spend a lot of time there, and am familiar with the staff from classes. I was awarded the Outstanding Leadership Award in 2012 from the St. Louis County at Washington University. I am involved in Webster LEADS and Cru on campus as well! I would bring my enthusiasm for Webster and community to my position. I have also had abroad experience; last summer I had the privileged of volunteering a month of my time in China working with disabled orphans. I really enjoy working with people and held multiple leadership positions in high school including student government positions. Thanks for your consideration!

Statement of Goals: I would like to continue promoting the George Herbert Walker School of Business and Technology as a place that has pride and history with making successful leaders in the workforce and at Webster. Making events that are held there more publicized, such as the Disabilities Conference that was held last fall should be a goal as well. Also, the new MBA program is taking off, and a show of support couldn't hurt! Whatever, I can do to make the school more beneficial for the student and community, I will work to make happen and am open to opinions and suggestions.

Intent to Run: I am running for George Herbert Walker School of Business & Technology Senator, as cosmopolitan graduate with strong leadership and enthusiasm for involvement, experience interacting with all cultures and possess cultural competence. I believe these varied experience will contribute significantly to Webster University.

 Natasha Sykes
Position Sought:

College or School: School of Communications
Major: Photography

 natashakykes

Intent to Run: I want to run for the position of Senator for the SOC. I believe that my experiences this semester, learning how SGA really works and gaining a better understanding of the SOC, will help me be a better Senator for Fall 2015.

Statement of Goals: I would love to, especially for the School of Communication, help to open up the communication between faculty and students. I am a part of the SOC, so all I want is for it to become the best it can be. I believe the way for that to happen is for faculty and students to be on the same page.

 Bobbie Watson
Position Sought:
Senator
Enrollment Status: Graduate
College or School: School of Communications
Major: Media Literacy

 bobbiewatson

Intent to Run: The major reason why I am running is because I am consistently being emailed student government information that I feel doesn't pertain to The School of Communications yet alone the Graduate School of Communications. I have been a Webster Student for almost five years starting as an undergraduate student and now doing graduate work. I am currently doing field work as a graduate assistant to Art Silverblatt while also working for The Galaxy Radio as a Film Critic. Over the years I have made numerous connections with The School of Communications staff and students and feel I could be a great representation and advocate for what they feel is important in student and campus life. As a undergrad I was an Honor Student and as graduate student I have maintained a 3.95 GPA recently earning The Michael Bingman Scholarship which is awarded to only two Graduate Communication student on the main campus and abroad. I was also recently inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa National Honor and Leadership Society. I feel my best asset to being a Communications Graduate student is that I have relationships with the influx of Saudi Students that coming to Webster University.

Statement of Goals: My Biggest Concern is to have a larger student involvement with classes that are selected to be taught and part of programs. Being a Media Literacy Major it is pretty slim pickings when it comes for electives for my major. Recently I have had to start to mingle more with the higher administration to create independent study classes to replace the lack of applicable classes towards my major. To achieve this we need student to feel more comfortable to ask questions and work with the administration rather than coasting on through.

 Michael Taylor
Position Sought:
Senator

 michaeltaylow

Intent to Run: I am running for the Graduate Senator position. I believe my experience from my undergraduate years will be useful for the operation and successfulness of Webster University's Student Government Association. I served on my fraternity's Executive Board for a year and 2 years as Alumni Relations Chair. I am comfortable with working in a group for a greater cause through general body meetings and committees.

Statement of Goals: I plan on bringing the needs and views of a Webster Graduate student to the table. I want to up the evolvement of Graduate students in the Webster Community.

 Rahel Charikar
Position Sought:
Senator
Enrollment Status: Graduate
College or School: George Herbert Walker School of Business and Technology
Major: Health Administration

 rahelcharikar

Intent to Run: I am running for the position of Graduate Senator. This position requires the senator to be a communication link between the graduate students and the administration board, meaning the senator has to have excellent communication skills. Working in the capacity of a professor presented me with an opportunity to polish my communication skills. It also taught me to understand and be empathetic toward others. Expressing thoughts concisely and precisely is another quality I developed with time. When I was in dental school, I participated and organized numerous dental camps. We targeted the lower socio economic schools and families. We offered free dental checkups and certain treatments. The association with such camps taught me patience and helped cultivate in me leadership qualities. Organizing, budgeting and advertising were areas that got better developed. I believe that most importantly a senator should know to how to create a balance between the board and students. This requires understanding of both the sides and acting like a proper channel between the board and the students. The opportunities of helping in dental camps has helped me develop these qualities. It’s a mixture of so many experiences that makes me a perfect match for the position.

Statement of Goals: Students in Webster are a close knit family. I would love to maintain these connections. I would encourage more activities and events that involved bringing students together. Graduate students need help networking. I would like to organize more career fairs and help students interact with alumni. Graduate students also need scholarships offered especially international students and that’s one topic I would like to bring on the agenda. I prefer understanding the problems faced by students in depth rather than superficially. I believe in participatory leadership where I feel a leader's best ideas come from the opinions garnered from her fellows.

 Jenni Toppi
Position Sought:
Senator

School or College: George Herbert Walker School of Business and Technology
Major: Human Resource Management

 jennitoppi

Intent to Run: I am running for the Graduate Senator because I want to be involved in making Webster even better place to study and live. I am a 26-year-old graduate student from Finland and hope to bring an international aspect to SGA's decision making. I am open-minded, honest and determined to make positive changes in the community that I am part of. I pride myself on my critical thinking and problem-solving skills and consider myself a good negotiator. I have served as a student representative in the Student Union of my University in Finland. I'd love to bring my experience and skills to SGA.

Statement of Goals: I want to bring SGA closer to the students and make the student representatives easier to approach. I hope to show to people that SGA is not only a funding back but an association trying to improve the students' life. As a graduate student who does not live at the campus, I want to help other graduate students to be more involved in the university's activities and with the university in general. I hope to tighten the relationships between local and internationals students as well.
